  • For many muscle car collectors, verification of a desirable model is necessary before considering a purchase, as it ensures the car started its life as it appears today. In the case of this Champagne Gold 1970 Chevelle SS, a build sheet verifies that it left the Atlanta, Georgia, assembly plant with its most important equipment.
  • Raise the domed hood to find a matchingnumbers L34 bigblock V8 which, despite emblems and decals to the contrary, displaced 402 CI thanks to an increase in the 396's bore. It was rated by Chevrolet as producing 350 HP and 415 lbft of peak torque. Aft of the engine is RPO M40, a Turbo HydraMatic TH400 3speed automatic transmission sending power to the Chevelle's 12bolt, 3.31geared rear end. The fun of driving this Chevelle wasn't limited to experiencing its prodigious torque at stoplight launches. Its chassis was equipped with the F41 special performance suspension, which included heavyduty springs and shock absorbers, plus front and rear sway bars. Drivability was also improved thanks to power steering and power brakes with discs in front. Eracorrect F7014 Goodyear Polyglas biasply tires are mounted to fivespoke SS wheels.
  • The Chevelle's interior is equipped with the optional Strato bucket seats, center console (with the stirrupshaped transmission shift lever) and a pushbutton radio in the dashboard. SS model Chevelles were fitted with instrument panels different from standard models, with three main pods in front of the driver housing a variety of gauges, depending on what was ordered. The pods in this instrument panel house a fuel gauge, speedometer and tach, while contemporary gauges in an underdash panel keep tabs on the engine's oil pressure, water temperature and voltage. Sold new at Matthews Chevrolet in Saluda, South Carolina, this Chevelle SS396 has been through a comprehensive bodyoff restoration.
